Ishwarchand Bidyasagar

As a boy I remember my parents always giving me example of Ishwarchand vidyasagar that how he was brilliant scholar and how he attained his great knowledge by facing so many difficulties. He used to read under a street light to gain knowledge as it was affordable for him to or to his family to own a gas lamp at home. n the year 1839, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar successfully cleared his law examination. In 1841, at the age of twenty-one years, Ishwar Chandra joined Fort William College as head of the Sanskrit department.

He remains one of the iconic figures not only on the historical contribution of West Bengal but also of India as a nation. He was and will always be an inspiration for those who want to rise from ashes and bring a proud name to their parents, themselves.

All the ideals of Ishwarchand were put to shame on 22nd September when two students were killed by police firing merely because the students were demanding appointment of teachers for Bengali and Science. Its very heart-breaking for even imagining the loss for the parents, those who must have started dreaming the future of those young students. Dream of studying Science which might have enabled them to become IshwarChand in future, one of them may have been able to rise and shine as a scientist or an engineer who might have given a technology to uplift the lives of millions or may be a doctor who would have been able to bring healthy lives to the people of Dinajpur.

It must be devastating for friends of Tapas Barman and Rajesh Sarkar who died among the firing of between the clash of students and police. Tapas and Rajesh could have been part the future of Bengal has been waiting for 71 years.  The wait for golden Bengal “ Sonar Bangla” seems endless as once the bright spot of the world has been diminished to land of strikes , communal breeding ground , political killing , women atrocities , illegal migration and politics of blood. West Bengal is at 23rd rank when it comes to per capita income. Which equates to less than a small state like Sikkim (Sikkim is a neighbouring state for west Bengal). Today there is darkness in the lives of those who knew or were connected to those who got killed by the police. There is darkness in the streets of Islampur and a darker future for those who are living in West Bengal.

When I look around as a Bengali boy who was bought up outside Bengal , I can see the frustration of the Bengali community who have been somehow forced to move out of Bengal to earn their bread butter , to give a better life to their families to live a fearless lives , to live under a democratic setup . our parent’s generation still thrive for going back to Bengal and still dream to go back to Bengal to their roots. But the reality is far from their dreams, West Bengal once gave the many revolutionaries, nationalists, freedom fighters, social reformers to India but today its fighting for its own identity , its own glory. The Bengal which once gave Vivekananda who Enlighted the entire world and his words influence lives of billions, struggle to find its place under the sun.

It’s heart breaking to see that when India is marching ahead of the world and is destined to achieve its lost glory, the state which once lead the nation is among the laggard.

Islampur , a small town in North Dinajpur district was taken into shock by the merciless killing of those two students who were merely protesting and demanding their right of having a Science and Bengali teacher. There is a permanent darkness in the lives of the parents and a never-ending wait for their friends. Their mother will never be able to cuddle them and never be able to make them eat. Words fall shot describing the pain and agony the family must be suffering.

This onus belongs to the TMC government and the blood is on their hands. I can give warning to the government reciting some words from the poem of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar “ Jab Nash Manuj Pe Chata Hai , Pehle Vivek Mar jata hai” it means when destruction arrives for a human his wisdom dies first.

The wisdom of Mamta dis government has been destroyed and its time that the people of west Bengal will make them understand. Bengali resurgence is bound to happen and is counting its days which are equal to the last days of TMC government.
